Students on Tour, an experience in humanity
As this summer of 2020 yields to the traditional break for students nationwide, we are all aware this summer is quite different than others of the past. At this point at the end of July, students who were accepted into the Battlefield Tour would have returned with stories and experiences that would undoubtably last the rest of their lives. However, this year’s tour has been affected by the world wide spread of Covid-19. As a result, the 2020 tour was canceled.
In place of this year’s articles and stories from students, I would like to walk through the experience I had while attending the 2019 Battlefields Tour in France during the 75th Anniversary of D-Day in Normandy France. I will also describe not just what happened during my time with our students, but how their experience as a group evolved.
Those wanting to know just what it was like to be on tour may gain a better understanding of the daily activities one could expect, and the gradual transformation many of the students exhibited in their demeanour. Afterwards, I outline some key values students take away from the tour that may not be apparent to them until later.
While the CBF 2019 Battlefields Tour also coincided with ceremonies for the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, the normal course outline still remained, with the addition of a few unusual experiences, most very interesting.
Given I joined the students part way through their tour experience, it was quite apparent the group had already formed a unique family. Their journey had already taught them tour operations through the use of two large transport vans (European bus). Life at home base was just as structured. Each day started early, and it didn’t hurt to have fresh bread delivered every morning at 4:30.[2jslideshow 6684]
