Commemorating Trooper James Wells, 1st Hussars

Written by Clare Vike
For my soldier profile, I had the opportunity to visit the grace of Trooper James Wells of the 1st Hussars. I wished to do something unique for my commemoration and decided to create an embroidery piece of his regimental badge. To do this, I looked up a photo of the badge and drew out the design in a pixel pattern. I then spent the next few weeks transferring that pattern onto cloth using strands of thread. I also added his name, date of birth, and date of death on the piece. Lastly, I printed out a copy of the biography I had written and placed it in the back of the frame. At the Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery in the Netherlands, I left the artwork at James’ grave where he is buried with a few of his comrades from the 1st Hussars.
