Moerkerke, The Leopold Canal and Bergen-Op-Zoom Canadian War Cemetery

Written by Armaan Gill

On June 1st, the CBF tour group and myself had the chance to explore the Netherlands and the campaign to liberate the nation during World War Two. Our day began with breakfast in Bruges, next we were divided into groups where we could be placed i the position of Canadian soldiers during the Battle of the Leopold Canal. We had done one of these war simulations for the First World War for the Battle of the Somme but this is the first one for the Second World War. After going over all the details of the battle and our attack strategies, we went to the actual battlefield in Belgium to see how the battle turned out in real life. After this, we went to the Bergen-Op-Zoom Canadian War Cemetery. At the cemetery, I had the chance to do my soldier profile presentation on Flight Sergeant Joseph Harvey Milton Lacelle which was a very touching moment. I was also very moved by Professor Pearson’s and Corporal Jones’ soldier profiles as they were stories that were personal to them and both of their respective communities. After a long day, we had a chance to have a nice dinner back at the hotel.
