Remembrance and Commemoration at Sun Quarry Cemetery

Written by Sebastian McPherson

We got the chance to visit Sun Quarry Cemetery to learn about and commemorate the life of Private Alfred “Alfie” Thomson. Being able to understand Alfie’s life, no matter how brief, reminds us that the thousands of Canadians who lost their lives overseas are more than just soldiers or a headstone.

Having the opportunity to not just learn more about my great great uncle but see him and tell others his story was an amazing experience. While I did not have the chance to meet him, nor most of my family, he is still loved and cherished by his family a century after his death. I left a photograph of his family at his headstone along with Canadian flag.

“May our dear laddie keep sleeping.”
